Welcome to English in a Minute.
Tape is helpful. It keeps things stuck together. But “red tape” can cause problems. Let’s listen:
D: So, are you getting your new driver’s license today?
A: Yes! And I remembered my birth certificate.
D: But you have your eye test, right? And proof of address?
A: Eye test? Proof of what? So much red tape!
D: Red tape? Or important department of motor vehicles requirements?
A: I call it red tape.
In large organizations like governments or corporations, there are lots of rules that may feel unnecessary. Those rules can even prevent things from being done on time – or at all. We call these rules “red tape.”
And that’s English in a Minute.
