Dear brothers and sisters,
In the gospel today we witness yet another miracle of Jesus. Jesus raises the daughter of a synagogue official. Jesus was requested by him to visit his house because his daughter was at the verge of death. But while he was on the way message come from his house saying that the child is dead. But Jesus still goes to the house urging the official to have faith. Why did he decide to go ahead? It was told to the official of the synagogue that his daughter is dead. But Jesus said to him, she is not dead, but sleeping. Both are true because she is dead to the man, to the father and others, but to Jesus she is asleep. St. Bede says for people she was dead, who were unable to raise her up; but to God she was asleep, in whose purpose both the soul was living, and the flesh was resting, to rise again. Hence, it became a custom among the Christians, that the dead, who, they doubt not, will rise again, should be said to sleep. The reaction of the people who were mourning the dead in the house was that they laughed at him when he said that the girl was sleeping. They mourned as if everything was over. They mourned because there could not see beyond this life. They mourned because they could not do anything more than that. Hence, they laughed at Jesus when he said that she is asleep. In their preoccupation with mourning for the dead which is a custom of the place they could not see the other possibility. They couldn’t see the possibility of her being asleep and she only need to be raised by the one for whom nothing is impossible. They in fact preferred to laugh at Jesus than rejoice over the possibility of the girl to be with them again. Such a perspective is possible only for those who have faith. Hence, Jesus took with him only those who believed when he entered the house. And they witnessed his power of raising her. Let us come to him with such a faith because our God is an all-powerful God. What is impossible for us is possible for him. amen
