Mask requirements have changed as the pandemic has progressed. While cotton masks were once thought to be acceptable in the early days of COVID-19, the transmissibility of Omicron has caused health experts to reconsider their efficacy—and instead recommend surgical masks, as well as KN95 and N95 masks.

While the official guideline for these masks is for a single use, health officials advise that this can be extended with some restrictions.
