If this trailer was supposed to blow you away and start the hype train rolling, I’m not aboard. The Battlefield 2042 reveal trailer was by far the dumbest scripted fake multiplayer preview I have witnessed from DICE. Even worse than the horrible reveal of Battlefield V.
Are we supposed to expect that in a game with 64 players (Xbox One / Playstation 4) or 128 maximum players (PC / Xbox Series X / Playstation 5), that 80% of the players are going to somehow all hang out on the same strip of concrete, not react to any actions building up against them and then all get wiped out by a falling Osprey VTOL / hovering bubble helicopter with dual gatling guns warming up etc… Do we all really stop fighting and stare at our enemies, as global warming decides to create a tornado in the middle of a metropolitan city?
The leader that backs out of the fight, because he’s too scared of the ambush? What the hell did I even watch? It’s a videogame, man – not a NowThis betaboy article. You play to win, not hold hands and hang out next to 30-40 other players. What is with all of these scripted events? None of this is going to happen in an actual live multiplayer game, it’s more like an old machinama video than it was a battlefield match.
To top it off, an IGN article listed here has reported that Battlefield 2042 will not include a campaign or battle royal mode. WHAT? Is this going to be a full priced game? I expect that they’ll be dropping $10 skins on a daily basis, along with season passes to raise the price of playing to approx. $100+ each from their targeted audience.
Does this game support cross-play on all platforms, or will it be locked down to current consoles only? Can PS4 and PS5 players play with each other? I read that there are two different player caps. Cross-generation play may also be up in the air.
Hopefully their gameplay reveal airing next week can answer the questions that should have never needed to been asked. As of right now, the hype train is waiting on the conductor.
My advice to DICE (Not that it matters): You need a single player campaign to show off the graphics and engine (this way, the game is playable after it’s hacked after 72 hours being released), you need a multiplayer mode to allow casuals an experience that they can win in and you need a battle royal mode to keep the streamers promoting your game. People want a competitor to Warzone. They’re craving it. You’re not delivering.
