Lee Konitz is one of the most original improvisers in jazz history, whose singing melodic line always implies a deep insight into the tune's harmonies. His sax tone is one of the purest and truest ones in the jazz tradition. Here Konitz gives his own rendition of Parker's "Anthropology", which is based on Gershwin's "I Got Rhythm". As Konitz always admitted, he owes much to Lester Young's style. Young opened the way to modern jazz improvising, also inspiring Parker. Bird held Konitz in high esteem, because he recognized in Konitz the only alto player who was not trying to imitate him. This solo has a natural swinging flow and the melody sings all the way through. The beginning of the theme is used by Konitz as the starting point for his own, original creation.
I recorded and performed several times with Lee Konitz over the years. I learned a great deal from him about improvisation, phrasing, time, and much more by listening to him, interacting with him on stage, listening to and talking about music with him.
Lee Konitz is one of the great jazz masters, whose relentless creativity crossed the 1940's through the 2010's.
This solo is suitable to all instrumentalists, as well as vocalists.
