Some contractors agreements with homeowners are called an assignment of benefits, essentially making the contractor the named insured and afforded all the benefits available under the policy. Homeowners would be wise to avoid these agreements. Also, a CA judge has ruled they violate consumer protections laws and circumvent the protections that a licensed public insurance adjuster affords the insured.
