In the United States' Seattle-area, dogs and food trucks are both popular. Now, one truck is combining both.
The Seattle Barkery rolled out ten months ago and is focusing on providing handcrafted canine treats.
STORY-LINE:
Air fried chicken feet, duck neck, these are not your typical food truck offerings.
Then again, the clientele has quite a discerning nose.
The Seattle Barkery is a food truck where the main customers often wolf down their treats.
The truck rolled out in the Seattle-area ten months ago, offering homemade gourmet treats for dogs and coffee and cookies for their owners.
"It's really exciting right now and just taking it one day at a time," says owner, Dawn Ford.
Ford and her husband, Ben, own and operate the truck.
She first began baking treats when she was a dog walker, concerned about a rash of product recalls.
"All of our treats are soft. All of our treats aren't filled with ingredients you can't pronounce," she says.
Food trucks have gone to the dogs in other parts of the country, but Ford says Seattle's dog-friendly reputation and well-established mobile eating scene make it spot-on for business.
"I think there is definitely a market for more things like that, where human and canine activities are combined," she says.
"You don't want to always leave them at home or leave them in the car."
Advice Ford follows. Her top-selling salesman is her dog, 'Sherman'.
The concept is new and rare enough that dogless people occasionally misunderstand and purchase a treat.
Popular items include bacon "pupcakes", mini cheesy donuts, pumpkin pretzels and peanut butter cookies.
"Oh peanut butter is like a must," says customer, Janelle Harding.
"It does kind of seem natural that now that we've conquered the people food truck market that we bring that to our faithful furry friends."
