(19 Sep 2021) Russia's Communist Party on Sunday decried what it said were voting irregularities in the country's parliamentary elections.
Taking place across three days from Friday to Sunday, the vote has been marked by numerous reports of violations, including ballot-stuffing, inadequate security and pressure on election monitors.
"I would like to express a protest against those who are trying to subvert the will of the people," said Yuri Afonin, deputy leader of the Communist Party.
He added that those who break election law "must be held criminally liable."
Preliminary results show the Communist Party doing better than the Kremlin-backed United Russia party in some cities and regions.
The Communists are likely to significantly increase their seats in parliament.
"On the ground, officials have been thrown off balance and become scared of the results the Communist Party is showing," Afonin said.
On the whole, early results from a limited number of polling stations showed United Russia in the lead.
