In this video we visit Anzac Station, the first station to open on Melbourne's new underground Metro Rail Tunnel. Well sort of... The 19th December 2022 saw the opening of the tram stop at Anzac Station, which is one of five new underground stations being constructed as part of the Metro Rail Tunnel.
Anzac station will serve the busy St Kilda Road precinct and provide access to the nearby Kings Domain and the Shrine of Remembrance. Anzac station is set to open for trains along with the rest of the Metro Rail Tunnel in 2025.
The new tram stop at Anzac Station is the permanent long-term replacement for the old Domain Interchange, and is constructed as an island platform in-between the main station entrance which will serve as Melbourne's first direct train-tram interchange without having to exit the station premises.
The station is served by trams along the busy St Kilda Road tram corridor, which includes routes 3, 3A, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 & 72, as well as route 58. Here we see some trams at the station on opening day, including Z3, B2, D1 (Siemens Combino) and E1 & E2 (Bombardier Flexity Swift) trams.
