The Correctional Services Department faces criticism following a harsh
report from the public protector regarding Thabo Bester's escape from
prison. The convicted rapist and murderer is accused of faking his
death in a fire while at the privately-run Mangaung Correctional
Centre in 2022. Bester allegedly received assistance from his
then-girlfriend, Dr Nandipha Magudumana, and several prison officials.
