A Tethered Ring is a proposed structure for supporting an electromagnetic space vehicle launcher in the stratosphere at an altitude that places it above most of the Earth's atmosphere. A Tethered Ring can also support an evacuated tube transit system to provide carbon-neutral international travel, communications equipment, photovoltaic solar panels, observatories, and leasable high-altitude space for hotels, restaurants, and other attractions.
A Tethered Ring is designed to be built on Earth and then raised into the stratosphere by the action of tensioning its tethers. It employs several lifting rings for redundancy, each of which houses a magnetically levitated spinning ring. The air within each lift ring is removed to reduce air friction on the spinning rings. The spinning rings generate outward inertial forces which combine with the tensile forces from the tethers to produce lifting forces that are equal and opposite to the gravitational and gyroscopic forces acting on the structure. Electrically powered thruster nacelles mounted on the ring and its tethers keep the structure on station.
