The Sulcata tortoise has a sad history in global herpetoculture as it has become a throw away pet. Similar to cute little ducklings and bunnies, people buy these inexpensive, small, adorable hatchling tortoises with no real plan in place for their future. Sulcatas are the world’s third largest tortoise species and they are powerful, destructive reptiles. Their outdoor requirements are tough to meet but indoors it becomes even more challenging, because as adults, they require secure, large, heated spaces.
