(26 Aug 2016) Gunmen attacked a number of restaurants in the capital of Somalia late on Thursday.
The attacks came not long after a a car bomber prematurely detonated an explosives-laden vehicle near the Turkish embassy compound.
Police said they opened fire on the car when the driver refused their orders to stop at a checkpoint near the beachside embassy.
The driver detonated the bomb in the middle of the road, they added.
Soon after the blast, an unknown number of gunmen attacked nearby restaurants.
According to witnesses, the first attack occurred near the Banadir Beach nightclub.
Gunmen also stormed the nearby Beach View restaurant, frequented by government officials.
Sporadic gunfire between security forces and the gunmen continued well into the night.
The identity of the gunmen remained unclear, but the Al-Shabab extremist group has been waging an insurgency against Somalia's weak UN-backed government for years.
