This particular Vlog has been about 2 years in the making. I met the author of the book, Denim Branded, Nick Williams, a couple of years ago when we were both visiting Candiani Mills in Milan. We got chatting about his love for the branding aspects of denim and jeans and how he was almost done working on a book on the subject.
I remember at the time thinking it was such a good idea that I was surprised that no one had done it before. But I was glad to know Nick was working on it.
A few months later, when the book was released I naturally ordered a copy. And it exceeded my expectation!
Denim Branded stretches from the very beginning of blue jeans to modern, contemporary brands. Nick dives so deep into every aspect of denim branding. From the humble rivet, the arcuate to the pocket flasher to denim banners and print ads and everything in between. It is fascinating to see the journey of the Big 3, Levi's, Lee and Wrangler from the early days of jeans as workwear staples to their rebirth as a fashion trend. He also looks at how modern-day denim brands pull on the history of blue jeans to inform and inspire their branding. I think this was the most interesting aspect for me. There are so many subconscious associations and the overview this book allows let's us get a new perspective on how we interpret a denim brand.
Denim Branded is one of these rare things, a coffee table book that you read cover to cover. Not only once. It is also an amazing resource and reference for professionals and enthusiasts alike.
Oh, and one final thing. Nick, sorry this took me 2 years.
