Today on the Wide Open we go to the 4J Ranch in South Texas to hunt the majestic centaur horned Oryx. This is an exotic animal that travels in herds. These animals were once widespread across North America. This species became extinct in the wild in the year of 2000. A group was released in 2016 in an acclimation program and now landowners can buy these animals and they breed very well in South Texas ranches.

This is an antelope. Males can weigh up to 460 and females can weigh up to 310 pounds. The coat is white with the red/brown chest and markings on their forehead down the length of their nose. Their herds can be up to 70 members and are usually guided by bulls. Climate change caused their demise in the wild and they were also hunted extensively for their horns.

Now landowners can buy them as breeding animals and create their own herd on their ranches. They like grassy areas, desserts, and you might guess, they come from Africa and the fringes of the Sahara desert. I wanted to target one of these amazing animals and so did my friend JW Hudek. I was guided by Landry Maguglin who works for the ranch. And JW was guided by Jared Owens - one of the landowners. So we harvested 2 of these amazing animals. These animals have some of the best exotic meat you can have. The meat is tender so you can prepare it like you would beef.

We stalked these animals in the brush old school style and we picked out 2 really nice bulls to harvest. The landowners needed to harvest some of the bulls because they needed to maintain a specific male/female ratio for a healthy breeding program. And we had a cat & mouse game to get a shot at these animals. I hope you like today’s show. We weren’t in Africa but it kinda felt like we were.
