They have a compact size and shape. The screech owls are small and agile. They are about 7 to 10 inches tall and have a wingspan of about 18 to 24 inches. They have prominent, wide-set feather tufts with bright yellow eyes. They have different brownish hues with whitish, patterned underside. This coloration helps them get camouflage against the tree bark. They have well-developed raptorial claws and curved bill. Coming in as an juvenile orphan, the New England Wildlife Center has cared for and raised this Screech Owl until it was well enough to be placed back into a nest by our friends from Trail Side Museum.
The New England Wildlife Center is an informal hands-on science education organization that uses the activities of veterinary medical care and rehabilitation of wildlife like raccoons, reptiles, and birds of prey, and the veterinary care of exotic pets like snakes, lizards, and turtles as a vehicle for learning by elementary, middle school, high school and undergraduate students. The Center, located in a green, sustainable facility known as the Thomas E. Curtis Wildlife Hospital and Education Facility, is in Weymouth, Massachusetts.
