In South India we often sit down & eat on banana leaves 🍃 🧘🏽♂️ 🧘🏼♀️ 😀 My mom always loves serving and then she eats together with us 🥰
I don’t think there is any environmentally friendlier way to serve food than serving on a banana leaf 😉 After eating you throw the banana leaves & it’s the food for the cow 🐄
There are also few more things which I learnt from my parents. In case if you know more feel free to type in the comments.
🧘🏼♀️ Sitting down and eating, we believe it’s good for the health. Kind of yoga!
✨You bend to your food & then put the food in your mouth. This is to respect the food we get, because in the past people were paid in form of rice and food.
✨Most functions in India they serve food in banana leaf. So when you attend a festival/ceremony then after you finished your meal you close the leaf from top to bottom. In case if you went to a funeral then you close the it from bottom to top. Symbolic way of representation. Some parts of India they don’t close the leaves, they close only when they go for funeral.
✨ In most of festivals/marriages in India, the food is served on banana leaves and will include all 6 tastes (Arusuvai):
Sweet (Inippu)
Chilli (Kaarppu/Erippu)
Sour (Pullippu)
Astringent (Thuvarppu)
Salt (Uvarppu)
Bitter (Kasappu)
