A few of my students asked for videos of G-runs to practice with, so I thought I’d put it out here for everyone.
There are lots of different G-runs used by bluegrass guitar players. Some of them are specific to style, and others are specific to certain songs (see “Uncle Pen” by Bill Monroe). This one is a good catch-all G-run that works in most bluegrass situations. It has a good syncopation and style that snaps in a bluegrass song. I play it with my index finger and it features a hammer-on to the first fret of the A-string and a pull-off from the 2nd fret of the D-string (E note) to the open D.
Make sure to hit that A-string hard, and never play a G-run unless you can hit it solid in just the right place!
Have fun!
