Italy and Austria, along with the EU, are building a mega tunnel, the Brenner Base Tunnel, in the mountains under the Brenner Pass. The section between Innsbruck and Fortezza is 55 kilometers long. Combined with the Innsbruck bypass, the total length of the line will be 64 kilometers. Once completed, it will be the longest underground railway tunnel in the world. The Brenner Base Tunnel, or BBT, is at the heart of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) corridor.
