From my trip there last month:
The Day the American Revolution started. The night of April 18th Paul Revere and William Dawes were told that the British were moving towards Lexington and Concord to confiscate arms. The lantern signal from the North Church was to alert the Boston public of the movement of British troops. Both Revere and Dawes alerted Patriots who in turn alerted more Patriots. They met up with Samuel Prescott in Lexington and the 3 of them continued to Concord only to be stopped by a British Patrol. Prescott managed to escape and get to Concord. Dawes also escaped, but fell off his horse ending his crusade. Revere was captured. Though often styled a battle, in reality the engagement at Lexington was a minor brush or skirmish.
