I'm going to talk about 12 mistakes you might be making while you're taking your blood pressure and you might be horrified to find out that your doctor's making the exact same mistakes.
The first mistake is drinking anything that contains caffeine before taking your blood pressure. So it's not just coffee, there are some teas that have lots of caffeine and other things like energy drinks. Caffeine makes your arteries narrower which will raise your blood pressure. The thing about caffeine is that it stays in your body for a long time so hours after you've drunk whatever it is you still have lots of caffeine circulating in your blood raising your blood pressure. The same goes for nicotine which you find in cigarettes and in nicotine patches for people who are trying to stop smoking and nicotine has the same effect as caffeine. It narrows your arteries which raises your blood pressure.
Another mistake that you should avoid when you're taking your blood pressure to make sure that you get accurate numbers is that you should never take your blood pressure with a full bladder. . When your bladders fall and you're trying to stop the urine from coming out that means you're activating your sympathetic nervous system. That's the part of your nervous system that's concerned with running and fighting and this will raise your blood pressure.
And that takes us to the next mistake which is so so common when you're going to see your doctor. Imagine you have a doctor's appointment and you're late and you're rushed and you manage to get there just in time and as you rush in through the door you're sat down and your blood pressure is taken. Wow! Of course your blood pressure is going to be high. That is wrong.
You should rest for at least five minutes, preferably 10. You should be at rest, you should be calm, you should be peaceful, you should be scrolling on your phone and then after that 10 minutes or so of rest then your blood pressure should be measured. The same goes for when you're at home. Actually the best time to measure your blood pressure is first thing in the morning after you've emptied your bladder and before you eat or drink anything.
And this next mistake causes a lot of anxiety. Taking one blood pressure reading and finding out that it's high is not enough to make a diagnosis of hypertension. Right? Just because your blood pressure is high on one occasion doesn't mean you're hypertensive. Your blood pressure has to be high on two separate occasions avoiding all the mistakes I'm talking about in this video. The next couple of mistakes are all about the actual cuff that you put around your arm to take your blood pressure.
So let's talk about the size of the cuff. There are actually different size cuffs for different people. When you're talking about adult cuffs you have the small adult cuff, you have the medium or regular adult cuff and this is the one that comes with blood pressure monitors and then you have the large adult cuff. Now all these cuffs, small, medium and large, those are arm cuffs. You actually have a thigh cuff that's even bigger that you use for people with very large arms.
To get the right size of cuff you need to measure around the middle of your upper arm. That's your mid-arm circumference and the measurement you get will determine the size of the cuff that you use. You don't need to memorize the measurements because most cuffs will actually tell you the arm circumference that goes with that cuff. So this is a cuff for my own personal blood pressure monitor and you'll see at the bottom that it has some measurements there. I believe it's 22 to 32 or something like that.
Another common mistake that people make is putting their cuff on over their clothing. This is wrong. There should be nothing between your cuff and your skin so that means that I should do this. This is going to be noisy. I need to move my clothing out of the way completely. It's still loose. It's not cutting off the blood supply to my arm but it's out of the way of my cuff. This is the way that you should take your blood pressure.
