Foreign Minister Marise Payne was quick to correct the record after the US' Secretary of State Mike Pompeo praised Australia for 'standing up' to Beijing.
Speaking after high-level talks between the US and Australia that went ahead despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Mr Pompeo praised Australia for 'standing up' despite "coercive pressure from the Chinese Communist Party to bow to Beijing's wishes."
Ms Payne was quick to distance herself from Mr Pompeo's strong condemnations of China, saying: "The secretary's speeches are his own. Australia's positions are our own."
