“My Idea Of Heaven” by Sam Lanin and His Orchestra 1927
Pathé Actuelle Needle Cut 36622
Vocalist: Frank McGrath
I was attracted to this record mostly because is it a splatter shellac disc. It just looks kind of cool to me. But, it is inferior in most ways to other labels of the day. The electrically recorded sound is not as present as you would find on other labels in 1927. Also, this record is a bit worn. It looks very clean, but when I tried to transfer it with a 4 mil stylus there was so much noise and distortion it was not very good. So, I tried something unintuitive to me, I used a 3 mil stylus instead. And, to my amazement, better sound. In almost all cases with worn records the larger stylus makes the sound better because it avoids the lower groove noise and damage. I cannot explain this one. While there is still a bit of distortion, overall this turned out pretty good.
