So last summer I spent a majority of my time getting this thing plated and on the road, which was an incredible achievement, but this summer we’re going 10 steps further. In order for this to be truly road worthy and reliable, much more work needs to be done. I need new plugs, wires, distributor and cap, belts, and most importantly, I need to change the exhaust manifold gaskets. Like many motorhomes of this vintage, this thing has a smog pump, or thermactor as it’s called, which essentially is a high pressure pump that pumps air into the exhaust manifold in an attempt to cause the exhaust to burn more completely. This is a good idea, and probably works wonderfully when the vehicle is new, but my motorhome was built in 1989, and all of the plumbing for the smog pump system is old, rotten, and leaking. This poses a huge safety hazard in this type of vehicle, since it means that the motorhome is leaking a high amount of exhaust into the cabin. If you have been following my channel in the last couple weeks, you will have seen a video of my carbon monoxide alarm being tripped, watch that here:

The goal is to remove the entire smog pump system which will solve a few problems. First, it will allow me to simply my exhaust system, getting rid of the leaky and rotten auxiliary manifold that feeds the main exhaust manifold. Second, it will allow me access to the main exhaust manifold, allowing me to change the badly leaking exhaust manifold gaskets. And lastly, it will greatly simplify my engine setup, allowing sufficient room to perform basic maintenance tasks like changing belts, oil, plugs, wires etc. etc. As of right now, my engine compartment is so jam packed with hoses, valves, and pumps, that it's extremely difficult to accomplish any of these simple tasks, which is not good if I plan on taking this thing on serious trips. So, in this video we start the process of simplifying this engine and making the necessary repairs, should be an adventure...wish me luck!!!
Liking and sharing my videos really helps with the process of making more.
