A nest box I was using as a sparrow decoy box got very very dirty. We thought this would be a good time to demonstrate how to clean your bluebird and chickadee nest boxes.

Here, we show helpful supplies including safety supplies, the cleaning solution we use to clean the nest boxes, and how we clean them.

I also discuss when to clean them. The best time is to clean them out after ever fledge. The degree of cleaning can depend on factors like how clean the nest was after the fact, and if the nest box had any infestations.

If there are infestations, clean the nest box out really really well. Or, if a wasp had built a nest in the box, scrub it really good - and then soap it after.

If the nest box was pretty clean, you can probably get away with a dry brush between bluebird broods.

It's also a good idea to do a full cleaning at the end and beginning of every nesting season.
