(6 May 2014) Around 150 military veterans protested in Venezuela's capital Caracas on Monday to demand benefits promised to them by the late President Hugo Chavez.
The soldiers, who all fought alongside Chavez during coup attempts in 1992, said they were promised various social benefits by the former leader.
They have accused current President Nicolas Maduro of not honouring these promises.
According to a decree signed by Chavez in February 2012, all those who participated in the coup attempts were to be fully reinstated into the military and given the accompanying social benefits.
However, protesters on Monday claimed some veterans had not been fully reinstated and therefore had not received the benefits from the FANB (Bolivarian National Armed Forces).
Four appeals on the grounds of unconstitutionality are currently before the Supreme Court, said one protester.
The government has yet to comment on the situation but Vice-President Jorge Arreaza was expected to hold a meeting with a delegation of the veterans later on Monday.
