This drive begins at US 24, at the junction with Colorado State Highway 82, and then heads east, past Twin Lakes, before climbing up to Independence Pass. At 12,095 feet, this is the second-highest paved through-road over a pass in Colorado. Once you're on the west side, the road descends into a beautiful aspen grove and squeezes through some tight spots -- where the two-lane road suddenly reduces to one lane, and must be shared by traffic headed in both directions. Eventually, we come to the city of Aspen, Colorado.
I made this trip in late September 2021, during the peak of fall colors in Colorado.
