In 1054, Pope Leo IX sends Cardinal Humbert of Silva Candida to the Patriarch of Constantinople with a letter of excommunication for the patriarch, drawing on the Donations rhetoric and reasserting Roman primacy over all Christian bishops. The incident sparked the Great Schism of 1054 which still separates the Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox to this day.
The original 9th-century forgery, the Constitutum Constantini from the Pseudo-Isidore False Decretals, is rediscovered by one of the pope's cardinals, but the document has some suitably amended text increasing papal claims even more.
