Why Doesn't Japan Have Aircraft Carriers?
The reason Japan delayed until now was because aircraft carriers might be seen as a violation of their postwar pacifist constitution. Add to that the fact that they depended on the US Navy CV based in Japan for their naval aviation needs. In fact, they converted the Izumo Class helicopter-carrying destroyers into CVLs with F-35B.
The Izumo class helicopter carriers are multi-role ships. This ship can carry out amphibious operations, anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare. This class provides the Maritime Self-Defense Force with greater power projection capabilities.
The aircraft carrier Izumo was launched in 2013. It was commissioned in 2015. It is the largest Japanese warship since World War II. Even larger than the previous Hyuga-class helicopter carrier.
