the origin of the name “Badut” is taken from the Sanskrit called bha-duyut which means "the light of the star Canopus." which means to be a light in the darkness, considering Canopus itself is the second brightest star in the sky.
However, another opinion states that the word "badut" refers to the diminutive name of the king who built this temple, King Gajayana, whose diminutive name was “Sang Liswa”. The word “liswa” means “like to joke” or in Javanese, mbhadut.
