Civil disturbances (often described as "riots") here in 1969 signaled the birth of the Gay Pride movement. This video shows what the bar looks like today and also gives you an idea of the surrounding area of New York's Greenwich Village, especially Sheridan Square. The statue in Sheridan Square represents Philip Sheridan, one of the most prominent generals on the Northern side in the American Civil War. "Stonewall," according to legend, was named because the original owner moved to New York from the South and named the bar after famed Southern general, Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson.
