If you head to Österlen (pronounced uh-ster-len) this summer, you won’t be alone: it’s a favourite vacation spot for Swedes. Spanning the southeast corner of Sweden, Österlen is what cute country dreams are made of: small towns with cobblestone streets, gorgeous beaches and independent farm shops and flea markets around every corner. Around the corner you’ll find Ystad, one of the most charming small towns in the country and (shockingly) home to the Nordic Noir genre.
Österlen travel facts:
- The easiest way to get to Österlen is to take a train to Lund or Malmö, then travel from there with public transport or by car. The region is full of hidden gems, which makes it perfect for road trips!
- Visit Ystad/Österlen has a comprehensive guide to the region: [ Ссылка ]. You can also read more at Visit Skåne ([ Ссылка ]) and Österlen.se (in Swedish - [ Ссылка ])
- Simrishamn is the largest town in the region and is a great starting point for day trips. Ystad, while technically not part of Österlen, is right next to the region and is also a great place to stay.
- Aside from usual hotel websites, check Airbnb or www.stugknuten.se for summer cottage rentals - great for a student budget!
- The Museum of Failure, as seen in the video, is located in nearby Helsingborg, another small city well worth a visit.
