A lot of people feel strange about starting this kind of lick on an upstroke. The mechanics of it are quite logical in terms of which pick strokes for which notes, but to master one aspect at a time, try this: move the lick along the timeline so that the first downstroke takes place on the first beat of the bar instead. Once you have programmed in those picking strokes, try repositioning the lick back to the upstroke beginning each beat. The First upstroke and the first downstroke are ocurring in an eighth note rhythm (1+2+3+4+).
