By 1793, the liberal French Revolution of 1789 had become a distant memory, as Jacobins became the dominant political faction. After the execution of Louis XVI, the Committee of Public Safety was formed in order to direct the war effort and to rid France of counter-revolutionary enemies of the people. Maximilien Robespierre During the Reign of Terror, which lasted for just over a year, the guillotine became an instrument of death that killed thousands - most notably Marie Antoinette.

This lecture has been split into two parts. The second part will focus on the political purges and the fall of Robespierre.
This lecture is chiefly intended for AP European History students, but will be good for World History and Western Civilization courses, as well as lifelong learners.
