Let's face it, no one likes being stopped by a police car. But, what happens when you're being stopped by an unmarked police vehicle? We recognize drivers may have hesitations and questions before and during these encounters. This video provides safety tips and ideas for both drivers and police officers to successfully navigate an unmarked vehicle stop.
Keep this in mind when being stopped by an unmarked police car:
- Put on your hazard lights.
- Slow down.
- When safe and feasible, call (or have a passenger call) 911 or the Emergency Communications Center to confirm an officer is stopping you.
- Ask for a marked police car/uniformed officer if a plain clothes officer has stopped you.
- Stop in a well-lighted or populated area or continue (slowly) to the nearest police or fire station.
Remember:
- CCPD uses red/blue lights on all of its vehicles.
- CCPD uses an assortment of vehicles including pick-up trucks, SUVs and passenger cars.
- Immediately call 911 if the person stopping you displays aggressive or unusual behavior. We realize this would lead a reasonable person to believe they are being stopped by an impersonator.
On that last point, officers are instructed to identify themselves right away during an unmarked vehicle stop. At all times, officers will employ and display officer and citizen safety measures, but are trained to understand the difference in marked/unmarked vehicle stops. It is our hope that in sharing this information, all members of our community will be on the same page!
