A common street attack scenario is, what we like to call, "road rage". Imagine you find yourself getting in a small car accident. Both of you exit your vehicles to go talk to one another. And suddenly, the guy you have hit with your car is coming at you, planning to hurt you.
Street self-defense is finding those little moments, those opportunities, where you can strike your attacker when he's least expecting it. If you find an opportunity, it's best to go pre-emptive and end it there.
However, if it so happens that he's verbally attacking you, try to diffuse the situation whichever way you can, whether it's by paying for his damages, calling insurance, telling your opponent the police are on their way, or that it's your fault and taking the blame.
A very common question we get asked: If your attacker doesn't stop, when do you hit?
When the person is no longer communicating with you, that is when you strike back. If he doesn't care about what you're telling him while trying to diffuse the situation, and if he continues verbally attacking you and repeating the same thing over and over again...you strike him first.
You do this so that he won't get momentum to build up and strike you when you least expect it. You do not want him to have an advantage over you.
