Arriving in Līhuʻe, the central shore of Kaua‘i is the island’s main commercial area. Home to the airport, the region also features numerous beaches and cultural landmarks. A community college, hospital, and countless shopping and dining opportunities characterize the lively area.
“The historic Country Building is located in Līhuʻe, which is the main hub for government and administrative services on-island.”
This central region of Kaua‘i is lined with a backdrop of the Ha‘upu mountain range and also contains the main harbor of Kaua‘i, called Nawiliwili. “Nawiliwili Harbor lies just outside of Līhuʻe, and is a major port for international and inter island cruise ships, as well as other commercial activities.”
This port resides in Nawiliwili Bay, next to Kalapaki Beach, a calm golden sand beach perfect for swimming, surfing, paddleboarding, or even watching ships come and go.
Positioned at the northern entrance to Kalapaki Bay, the 86-foot tall Ninini Point Lighthouse lookout has stunning views of the central coastline and airplanes whizzing by. “Located just above Nawiliwili Harbor, the Menehune Fish Pond displays an example of ancient Hawaiian aquaculture. According to legend, the pond was built over 1000 years ago by the Menehune,
a small mythical race of people where the pond received its famous name.”
With a 900 foot long and five feet high stretch of lava rock, the Menehune Fish Pond runs along the Huli‘ia River and National Wildlife Refuge.
The natural wonder of central Kaua‘i is also found in one of the region’s most prominent waterfalls, called Wailuā Falls, “At 173 feet, Wailuā Falls flows into the south-end of the Wailuā River.”
As one of the island’s most traveled areas, the central shore of Līhuʻe has countless options for exploration. In addition to ample outdoor activities, Līhuʻe also consists of two historic sugar plantation sites, a museum, diverse dining options, and several shopping centers.
