The Civil War was one of the greatest tragedies to ever befall the United States, with most of the South seceding from the Union to form the Confederate States of America. But, there was a point when the United States *almost* broke out into Civil War, about thirty years earlier than in our timeline. During what was known as the Nullification Crisis, South Carolina, upset about high tariffs that had recently been passed, decided that they were null and void in their state. Andrew Jackson threatened to enforce the tariffs by force, with South Carolina in turn threatening to secede. After a miraculous compromise by Henry Clay, though, South Carolina backed down, and the crisis was averted. But, what if, in an alternate timeline, South Carolina had seceded? Enjoy!
