As beer becomes popular in China, many Chinese drinkers are looking for novel brews. It has created great opportunities for importers who now want to deliver original American craft beer to the Chinese market.
Craft beer is brewed by smaller breweries using innovative ingredients and methods. The U.S. Brewers Association says craft beer was a 22.3-billion-dollar market last year.
"As people started realizing that beer has flavor, the diversity, there's different styles, you can pair beer with food. It started exploding," said Mark Snyder, export development program manager of the U.S. Brewers Association.
A report from Euromonitor International says China could overtake the United States as the world's largest beer market by 2017. This huge potential is the reason why many Chinese participants have been drawn to this year's Great American Beer Festival held in Denver, Colorado. The 3-day event (October 6-8) received a record 60,000 visitors.
"Because Chinese craft beer is growing really, really fast, we want to learn what the Americans (are) doing here," said Michelle Wang, publisher of Beer Link Magazine.
Wang wants to help Chinese beer importers, like Ernest Chin, to strike deals with American craft brewers.
"Hopefully looking forward to it (deals with American craft brewers). This is part of the purpose we are being here today," said Chin.
Some U.S. brewers are also eying the Chinese market.
"There's no market that has more potential than China," said Kevin Selby, CEO of Crazy Mountain Brewery.
"We really kind of want to be that first person to the party if we can," he added.
