Dr. Camille Kezer, a Resident Physician in Internal Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, shares insights from her article appearing in the April 2021 issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings where she notes that women represent a rapidly growing subset of patients with alcohol associated liver disease and that women suffer worse disease as compared to men. She describes multiple mechanisms of alcohol metabolism and hormonal differences between the sexes that contribute to this disproportionate rise in liver disease in women. Dr. Kezer notes the best strategy to reduce liver disease is to abstain from using alcohol. She also notes that interventions including addiction treatment programs and pharmacotherapy are effective in treating women with alcohol-use disorder. Available at: [ Ссылка ]
