A Playstation 1 1999 action, hack n slash horror game. Starring Samurai, Ninja, and demons, Soul Of The Samurai is a short, fun experience with enjoyable combat and some memorable writing. Though maybe not in the most positive of ways.
Set in old school Japan, a village is overtaken by Soul Bugs, that turn people into slaves to their Lord. Once the bugs are inside, the person is lost, there is no cure. Now, to save the remaining members of the town, Kotaro and Lin must work together and find answers to their questions, and reveal the true evil behind these monsters.
The combat comes with a focus on parrying and timing your counters just right. It's a rewarding system that carries Soul Of The Samurai start to finish, making for a sense of self improvement as you try to master the perfect parry and get that cool animation. Though the combat isn't the deepest, it works and makes the game worth a playthrough.
Both characters are fun to play as, and a requirement for the full story. Plus, they are different enough outside of the story for you to want to try what both have to offer. I recommend Kotaro first, but either is fine. Just be sure you do the optional stuff, too. It'll get you extra heals that make a big difference to the difficulty.
Please enjoy this full walkthrough where I learn Soul Of The Samurai's gameplay and try my best to not embarrass myself. This playthrough is a full longplay as I felt it would be best suited for a game like this. Short, sweet, and makes for a fun way to spend an afternoon. I had a lot of fun playing Soul Of The Samurai, and maybe you'll find fun in watching my walkthrough. I didn't unlock every weapon, but I did do as much as I could find and experience. Love this PS1 gem, and I am even happier I keep finding new Playstation 1 games to play for the first time.
More on the Soul Of The Samurai's PS1 gameplay; From the start the player chooses to be either a young male ronin named Kotaro or a teenage female ninja named Lin (Rin). From then on he or she travels through prerendered levels, killing enemies and fulfilling their mission.
There is a single attack button, but combined with different directional buttons pressed in different combinations and held down for various intervals. There are different attack speeds which correlate to the weight of the equipped weapon, and this is displayed on the sword's 'check' window (also displayed is the sword's length and sharpness, and a brief description of the blade).
Main characters:
Kotaro Hiba: Kotaro is a masterless samurai who travels Japan. Not much is known about his roots, other than he grew up in a dojo with a boy called Yukinosuke, training in the ways of Japanese swordsmanship. Both were apparently raised by their 'master', and Kotaro reveals his parents have already died. Yukinosuke reveals, that when growing up, they were both of equal skill, with neither ever able to clearly defeat the other in sparring contests. Kotaro left suddenly one day, after his parents died. He has a laid back attitude to life and does not sit in the traditional seiza sitting position in the dojo.
Lin (Rin): Lin is a ninja who was orphaned as a child. Both she and her brother, Shin were taken in by a ninja clan and trained in the art of ninjutsu until they were strong enough and skilled enough to carry out missions as a spy for the Tokugawa shogunate government. She resents the 'kid' image Kotaro uses on her, despite her youth. She has feelings for Kotaro, which is revealed at the game's end.
A Konami game from peak Konami years, but not on the level of Metal Gear Solid, Soul Of The Samurai tries to be a samurai Tenchu game, and while nowhere near that level of fun, or iconic, it's a good title. I hope it's fun enough watching me play this PS1 gem to have you go and try it for yourselves.
