The Sutras are phrases, essential statements, that carry
implicit or explicit a truth that must be revealed through reflection. They are not phrases to remember, they are ideas and concepts to develop and internalize, and adapt to daily behavior.
In their time, 500 BC, they were a tool for transmitting the truths that the enlightened wished to leave to their followers or descendants. In those times there was neither printing nor books, and therefore all transfer of culture depended on oral transmission. This required that the affirmations, the Sutras, be short, concise, and above all generic. Gautama Budha left 53 Sutras in his Dhammapada work, which together constitute his entire doctrine.
Each Sutra should be carefully read and its content reflected on.
Almost all are cryptic, the truths contained are not in exhibition, but must be revealed through their profound understanding.
