Why Were Ancient Greek And Roman Statues Always Marble White?
Today, the vast majority of existing Roman and Greek statues are coloured white. During the Renaissance many sculptures such as Michael Angelo replicated this, believing this was the intended colouration of the ancient statues. In fact, ancient Roman and Greek statues were once beautifully multicoloured, much like contemporary mosaics and other artwork of the time. Sadly, the paint used was not very durable and weathered away, leaving behind the unblemished marble that we are familiar with today.
