Em 1896, Alice Guy-Blaché (1873-1968), que também vivia em Paris, a primeira mulher cineasta do mundo, aos 23 anos de idade, produziu e realizou o seu primeiro filme: “La fee aux choux” (A fada do repolho), filmado com a câmara Kinora Reels, a primeira geração de câmaras de cinema.
Este é o primeiro filme narrativo ficcional da história do cinema.
Mas diferente dos Irmãos Lumière, Alice não se torna mundialmente conhecida.
Ela começa a fazer filmes na mesma época que eles, quando o cinema ainda estava se constituindo, entretanto pouca gente sabe da existência dela.
“Be Natural: The Untold Story Of Alice Guy-Blaché“ (Be Natural: A história nunca contada de Alice Guy-Blaché), de 2020, narra a trajetória desta mulher cineasta. Filme realizado e editado por Pamela B. Green.
Alice foi contemporânea, não apenas de Auguste e Louis Lumière, mas também de George Méliès, Edwin S. Porter e DW Griffith. É reconhecido o passado desta geração de homens do cinema, mas poucos se lembram de Alice Guy-Blaché.
Para construir o retrato da pioneira do cinema, a realizadora norte-americana (que viveu muitos anos na Europa) Pamela B. Green, faz uma longa-metragem, vasta e com profunda pesquisa; um trabalho quase arqueológico. Demora 6 anos para finalizar o documentário (2012-2018) e apenas em 2020 consegue lançá-lo.
No filme, ela vai nos revelando o passado cinematográfico de Alice Guy-Blaché. Uma mulher que se iniciou como secretária na empresa Le comptoir général de photographie, do engenheiro Léon Ernest Gaumont, em Paris. Empresa que vendia equipamentos e materiais de fotografia e cinema.
