The Indonesian President Suharto Tuesday (19/5) pledged to step down after new parliamentary elections, and warned of the possibility of civil war amid mounting calls for his resignation. The sound was cut as Suharto started his talks including with Abdurrahman Wahid the leader of the country's most influential 30-million strong Moslem organisation Nahdlatul Ulama. Also present was Ali Yafi from the Indonesian Council of Moslem Scholars and Anwar Haryono of the Proselytisation Council. They also included Nurcholis Majid and H.M. Ainun Najib, two Moslem intellectuals who have called for a fresh elections three years ahead of the end of Suharto's current term.
