Ontario Premier Doug Ford held a daily briefing Monday on his government’s response to the novel coronavirus pandemic, in which he addressed the difficulty in getting medical supplies from the United States.
Ford addressed reports that 500,000 medical masks had been held up at the border, but have since been released, and said his government has been in talks with officials in the U.S., including U.S. trade representative Robert Lighthizer and federal officials in Canada.
All of this comes on the heels of a statement last week by 3M saying that the Trump administration had ordered the company to stop exporting N95 respirators to Canada and Latin America.
Ford also announced new benefits for Ontario parents impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, including a one-time payment of $200 or $250 for children with special needs.
Ontario reported 309 new cases of COVID-19 on Monday, bringing the provincial total to 4,347. There were 13 new deaths, resulting in the death toll rising to 132.
