“Caruso” is a song written by Italian singer and songwriter, Lucio Dalla, in 1986. Dalla was inspired by a story about Enrico Caruso (1873-1921), an Italian tenor who succeeded in America. It happened that Dalla stayed in a hotel room in Sorrento and discovered that Caruso had stayed in that room shortly before his death, and that he was in love with a young woman. The song is written in a mixture of standard Italian and Neapolitan. It was sung by famous Opera singers such as Pavarotti and Andrea Bocelli. Lara Fabian’s performance of this song (which does not contain all the original lyrics) is considered the most emotional. She refers to this song as one of the most beautiful songs ever written and notes her very personal connection to it because of her Italian heritage.

Qui dove il mare luccica
E dove tira forte il vento
Su una vecchia terrazza
Davanti al golfo di Surriento
Un uomo abbraccia una ragazza
Dopo che aveva pianto
Poi si schiarisce la voce
E ricomincia il canto
refrain: [Te voglio bene assai
Poi all'improvviso usci una lacrima
E lui credette di affogare
refrain
Confondono i pensieri}
Cosi divento tutto piccolo
Anche le notti la in America
Ti volti e vedi la tua vita
Come la scia di un'elica
{Ma sì, è la vita che finisce
Ma lui non ci pensò poi tanto
Anzi si sentiva già felice
E ricominciò il suo canto}
refrain (2)
Dint’e vene sai.
و افکارت را به هم میریزند.}
و آوازش را از سر گرفت:}
Here, where the sea shimmers
And where the wind blows hard
On an old terrace
In front of the Gulf of Sorrento
A man embraces a girl
After she has cried
Then he clears his throat
And begins to sing again
refrain: [I love you very much
So much, so much, you know
It is a bond from now on
That melts the blood inside the veins, you know]
He saw lights in the middle of the sea
He thought of the nights there, in America
But they were only the fishing lights
And the white wash of a propeller
He felt the pain in the music
And he rose from the piano
But when he saw the moon emerging from a cloud
Even death seemed sweeter to him
He looked into the girl’s eyes
Those eyes, green like the sea
Then suddenly a tear fell
And he felt he was drowning
refrain
The power of opera,
Where every drama is false
With a bit of make-up and with mimicry
You can become someone else
{But two eyes that look at you
So close and true
Make you forget the words
They confuse thoughts}
So everything becomes small
Even the nights there, in America
You turn and see your life
Like the wash from a propeller
{But yes, it’s life that ends
But he didn’t think much about it
On the contrary, he already felt happy
And began his song again}
