Siurana de Prades is a small town located on top of a cliff that dominates the entire Siurana valley and a good part of the El Priorat region from a height of 730 meters. Completely surrounded by cliffs almost 300 meters above the river and the reservoir, the town exudes a marked medieval character rich in legends that contribute to drawing an almost mythical atmosphere around it.
The best known of all speaks of the time when Siurana was the only Muslim bastion in all of Catalonia, and its castle was the last stronghold of the Arab vali Almira Almemoniz. When the Christian troops of Ramon Berenguer IV arrived, the valí's daughter, named Abdelàzia, of singular beauty, preferred to jump into the void from the highest cliff rather than fall into enemy hands. She covered her horse's eyes and directed him towards the abyss. The beast realized it too late to avoid the fall, but the desperate attempt to brake at the last minute can still be seen in the shape of a horseshoe marked on the rock of the Salt de la Reina Mora, which is what the cliff is currently called.
Precisely, the remains of the Arab castle greet the visitor to Siurana. It is a military building from the 9th century that previously completely closed the path to the urban center. The popularly called Jail stands out, a room covered by a vault of ashlars.
The end of the Siurana cliff is occupied by the church of Santa Maria, built in a Romanesque style between the 12th and 13th centuries, which is preserved in excellent condition. It is a building with a single nave with a semicircular apse.
It should also be noted that Siurana has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as demonstrated by the remains of flint instruments found in this place.
