Project 18 Destroyer
The answer to PLAN's massive destroyer is going to be India’s Project 18 class destroyers. These warships are going to be massive next generation stealth guided missile destroyers having a displacement of 13000t.
Weapons
The destroyer is going to be equipped with advanced systems and all latest weapons along with avanced AESA and PESA radars, and active and passive array sonars. There are also updates that these destroyers will be equipped with lighter version of SMART ASW missiles for taking on enemy submarines & Advance Torpedo Decoy system. It may feature 120 VLS for anti-ship, land attack missiles and SAMs. It might feature the hypersonic version of BrahMos Missile, BrahMos-NG, LRSAM-ER, LRCM, MRSAM etc. Its also speculated that Electromagnetic rail gun will be replacing the classic naval gun and it might feature LASER gun and direct energy weapons but there is no clarity on it.
Radars & Sensors
DRDO in collaboration with Bharat Electronics will be designing & developing the next generation of radar systems, air defence systems and sensors. The AESA and PESA radars to be used in the destroyers are going to have extended ranges and could possibly be merged into single multi-band radar. The destroyer will also have an X-band optronic mast detector radar. It is even expected that this giant boat will have capabilities of Ballistic Missile Defense System. It will feature HUMSA-NG - a third generation ship borne, hull mounted, Sonar system developed by DRDO and productionised by BEL.
Hosted Aircrafts
Project 18-class destroyers will be able to host a utility helicopter and will be equipped with advanced UCAVs and UAVs. There is a possibility of a compact version EMALS to be deployed on the destroyers is also being worked out.
How will this mega ship be powered?
The massive Radars, Railguns and EMALS system would need huge power which will be achieved with the help of Integrated Electric Propulsion(IEP) which will be future of propulsion of warships. The IEP eliminates the need for clutches and gearboxes by using electrical transmission rather than mechanical transmission of energy making warship efficient, easy to maintain, silent & stealthier. L&T and DRDO will further work on DRDO’s already launched programe Gas Turbine Enabling Technology (GATET) for developing the marine propulsion.
The planned gas turbine will deliver power up to 36 MW, and destroyer will have 2 of these to deliver a power of 72 MW, in conjugation with 2 diesel generators of 10 MW each and 2 electric propulsion motors of 20 MW. Tata Advanced Systems Ltd. (TASL) which has designed platform, bridge, and Combat Management Systems in the past will work on Diesel generators and motors.
Project Development
There are plans to build 6 such destroyers for Indian Navy with the first one to be launched by 2028. Mazgaon Dock Limited is the only shipyard which is capable of building destroyers and is at presently constructing Vishakhapatnam class destroyers whose development is expected to complete by 2025. At present 4 destroyers of this class is planned out of which INS Vishakhapatnam is already commissioned, Mormugaon under sea trials and Imphal and Surat is under construction. It is expected that post the construction of these destroyers the Project-18 class destroyer will be next big-ticket item. The Project-18 is still in conceptual phase and its part of Indian Navy's Maritime capability perspective plan. We can expect Navy to rollout RFP for Project-18 class destroyer in an year or two. It will take another 5 years to build the destroyer and if all goes as planned we can expect the destroyer to be launched by 2028. As China has already fielded its Type-055 class destroyer, we hope this project does not get delayed any further.
