Booze and boating don't mix. That's the message from law enforcement officials, who will be out in full force this weekend looking for impaired boaters.
They're calling it "Operation Dry Water," as the DNR and other agencies are increasing patrols on area lakes. They say there's good reason for it because impaired boating is one of the leading causes of boating accidents in Minnesota. Last year 58 people were arrested for boating while intoxicated in Minnesota.
"I think 90 tickets were written in Hennepin County. And the largest percent of that right here on Lake Minnetonka," said DNR conservation officer Thor Nelson.
Nelson says that's why they are keeping a close eye on Lake Minnetonka.
"We want to get the message out that abuse of alcohol and drugs on the water is not accepted and will not be tolerated."
Boating while intoxicated is not only a bad idea and against the law, but can also affect your driver's license.
"Driving privileges can be suspended and revoked, as a result of a third degree, and higher levels of boating under the influence," said Nelson
A first-time violation is a misdemeanor, up to 90 days in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. After multiple violations, a driver could lose his boat.
